WHAT IS METAL STAMPING?

Metal stamping is a long-trusted technique to create customized metal designs. From machine parts to tools and more, stamping has numerous uses across a wide range of industries. For practical, cost-effective parts, stamping could be the solution you need.


Metal stamping is a manufacturing process that cuts and shapes sheets of metal into finished pieces. These pieces are typically used in the creation of larger products.
Metal stamping can make something as simple as a metal washer, or as delicate as fine jewelry.
One of the largest advantages of metal stamping over other metal shaping processes is its accuracy. Metal stamping can produce 1,000’s of identical parts — made to exact specifications.
Stamping may use tools that cut or shape the metal. Stampers choose different dies to create the desired shapes, either holes or formed parts. Some systems use a series of dies, in a progressive order. Generally, when cutting or shaping, the process happens to cold metal.
While some types of metal shaping use heat, stamping typically forms the metal without heating it, preserving its natural integrity since metals expand when heated and shrink when cooled. The tradeoff of using cold stamping is the increased precision needed to create the desired three-dimensional shapes. The cold metal is not as malleable as hot metal. When heat enters the picture, the metal’s coefficient of friction raises significantly — 40 percent or higher — resulting in a sticky, hard to work with metal. This friction explains why stamping hot metals is difficult and not preferable for many projects.
Industrial stamping requires the use of dies to form the metal into the desired shapes. Precision, skill, and engineering govern the creation of these dies, which need regular maintenance to produce the same tools and parts consistently over time.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT STEPS IN METAL STAMPING?
In metal stamping, many different steps go into creating the final product. Here are some of the main steps that go into creating metal hinges, brackets, springs, and more:
Blanking is the process of cutting shapes from a large sheet of metal. The cut circle, square, or other shape is then manufactured into its designated final product. The leftover sheet metal is scrapped or recycled for another project.

Punching is very similar to blanking, but with one key distinction. The piece that is cut out from the original sheet of metal is scrapped, and the surrounding metal is what is kept for continued processing.
Metal stamping combines both of these processes into one step. The outer shape and any inner cutouts are stamped from the sheet metal simultaneously. This is more efficient and allows for the precise mass production of a finished product.
